We’re based in Longmont, Colorado where there are plenty of great local Front Range fly fishing locations within an hour’s drive from our store on Main Street. Some of the best fishing can be found in your own backyard, so to speak. So wait no longer: check out these four best fly fishing locations near Longmont.

Destination: Eldorado Canyon State Park

Distance From Our Longmont Fly Shop: 35 mins

This location offers some of the best fly fishing in the Boulder area - with many trout- packed stretches of the South Boulder Creek. There are three main parts of Eldorado Canyon that are popular with fly fishers: upper, middle, and lower sections. These sections vary in difficulty to get to, and strength of current. So if you want to wade in open, calm waters, consider the upper section, located near the State Park Visitors Center. If you’re looking for a more adventurous fly fishing location, try the middle section, which has some rock scrambles, faster currents, and tougher fish - which are mostly trout, as is common with many Colorado fishing locations.

Destination: Boyd Lake

Distance From Our Longmont Fly Shop: 28 mins

Boyd Lake is one of the most accessible locations on this list. This reservoir is located near Loveland, and is a vast body of water on the prairie, with views of the mountains in the distance. Although this location can have heavy recreational traffic, and is definitely more casual in nature, there is something for every fly fisher here. Rainbow Trout are stocked by the Colorado Department of Wildlife. Ther are alsoe large numbers of White Bass, Catfish, and Carp to name a few. And on a good day, you could even catch a Largemouth or Smallmouth Bass, depending on the season. Given the prairie nature of the reservoir and the resulting food chain, these fish are always hungry, so be sure to bring an abundance of flies to choose from.

Destination: Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Distance From Our Longmont Fly Shop: 52 mins

Located near the city of Golden, and under an hour from Longmont, this location boasts beautiful views at the feet of the Rocky Mountains, complemented in the Spring and Summer by flowing green fields of wild grasses and flowers. In addition, Golden Gate Canyon State Park has numerous ponds, streams, creeks, and tributaries - all of which are stocked year round. You can fish in any body of water inside the park, with the exception of the Show Pond near the Visitors Center. There is a fee to enter and park, so make sure to bring some extra cash if you plan on coming to fish at this wonderful location.

Destination: St. Vrain State Park

Distance From Our Longmont Fly Shop: 12 mins

The most local fly fishing spot on this list, St. Vrain State Park is a great place for beginners, or those of any skill level looking for a quick day trip from Longmont. Located near Hwy 119 and I-25, there are several large ponds full of trout, many small fish, and some larger trophy fish as well. Perhaps the best part of this state park is just how local it is. This is the perfect location for a quick trip after work or school, and a great place to bring family and friends. There are over six miles of easy to moderate trails in the park, leading to different ponds and piers for fly fishing. The stunning views of Longs Peak, and the fact that it's right in our backyard and always stocked with fish makes this a great place for fly fishing any time.
